.Janson's History of Art: The Western Tradition Reissued Edition. Description For Art History Survey coursesExplore the reissued Janson and experience the history of artJanson’s History of Art: The Western Tradition, Reissued Eighth Edition presents the same content as the text’s Eighth Edition, published in 2010, now reimagined for digital learning via Revel, and also available through the Pearson Custom Library. While remaining current with new discoveries and scholarship, the Reissued Eighth Edition maintains its focus on the object, its manufacture, and its visual character, and continues to consider the contribution of the artist as a key element of analysis. Content that fosters art-historical thinking. A clear organization and contextual emphasis conveys the compelling story of Western art.

Most chapters integrate the media into chronological discussions instead of discussing them in isolation from one another, which reflected the more formalistic approach used in earlier editions. The authors continue to draw connections among works of art, as original author H.W. Janson did, as well as emphasize the patronage and function of works of art and the historical circumstances in which they were created. The Reissued Eighth Edition explores how works of art have been used to shore up political or social power. The Reissued Eighth Edition is characterized by fresh interpretations of cultures. Western art history encompasses a great many distinct chronological and cultural periods, which the authors treat as distinct entities.

For example, Etruscan art is presented as evidence for Etruscan culture, not as a precursor of Roman or a follower of Greek art. Inspired by contemporary approaches to art history, the Reissued Eighth Edition addresses the representation of women as expressions of specific cultural notions of femininity or as symbols. As in previous editions, women continue to be given great visibility as artists, as patrons, and as an audience for works of art. The objects, media, and techniques incorporated throughout the Reissued Eighth Edition reflect the continuous changes in the discipline. The mediums discussed are broad in scope and include not only modern art forms such as installations and earth art, but also the so-called minor arts of earlier periods — such as tapestries, metalwork, and porcelain. Discussions in the Materials and Techniques boxes illuminate this dimension of art history. An exceptional design that helps students best appreciate art.

Product Information. Edouard Manet was one of the most innovative and controversial artists in the 19th century. A painter of modern life, he portrayed the new leisure activities of Parisian aristocracy and bourgeoisie. A Bar at the Folies-Bergere reflects Manet's interest in the new social mobility of Parisian society as a result of the Industrial Revolution and the interaction of classes. The viewer is presented with a mirror set close behind the barmaid, which reflects the densely packed sparkling interior of the famous dance hall that virtually symbolized Parisian nightlife at the time. Also reflected in the mirror is a man across the counter, facing the barmaid.

The scene suggests that he is propositioning her, for as is well known, the servers were as available as the drinks and the sexually symbolic fruit on the counter. Strikingly in contrast with the buoyant setting, this act of interaction between social classes reflects the grim aspect of modern life that comes with the increasing commodification of society.

But as is typical of Manet, the picture, filled with references and hidden meanings, defies any one interpretation and is open to multiple readings.
