Well, it sounds like you're just getting into this. There's a couple ways you can go.The Headphone RouteI use headphones 90% of the time, ones with good separation. For me it's because I like the noise reduction around me and I am a laptop musician primarily. I do a lot of composing at 3AM in my PJs in bed.

Sennheiser HD 280 Pros are what I use - they can be found for between 120 and 200, and they're very, very good.Near Field, Inexpensive but Pretty Good Studio MonitorsIf you're on a budget, but you must have monitor speakers, M-Audio's Studiophile BX5s are pretty decent for the money. They can be had for $279 for a pair at audiomidi.com, and they'll work.

Eventually, you'll want to get the bass unit that hooks up to them, because their low end is a tad weak. Very good for a beginner's project studio.I have a mound of money. I want some damn fine speakers.Nothing compairs to the Event 20/20 self amplified monitor speakers. Dig around for prices, but a pair will run you many hundreds more than the Studiophiles. You will hear the difference though, these are primo.Also, if you go the speaker route, get some nice cables. Monster Cables are good.

Make sure to check what the connectors you'll want to use are - that sound card uses RCA. Either of the speakers I mentioned can use quarter inch or XLR. It's important to invest in some good cables.
