Review is for a different.( 0)( 0)Shadows of a NomadIf anything, DJ Shadow knows exactly how to invoke a particular mood in his music. His album “Endtroducing” is the perfect model of this artistic skill, and it is by far my favorite collection of songs. In “Endtroducing,” DJ Shadow blends dance with expression.

It is as if the album is a storyline for the listener to interpret, an abstract gallery for the ears to channel through to the mind. The piece jumps from world to world, some different than our own, using music as its mode of transportation. Shadow almost always includes complex drumbeats in the songs from this album. The rhythms give way for energy, and it is this rhythmic energy that drives the songs. They are the backbone of the album, the foundation for the exquisite layers that surround it like flesh on a skeleton. From epic journey to relaxed bliss, the beat is the primary source of life in each track.

A year ago, while in my senior year of high school, I found my mom’s two DJ Shadow CDs. I put “Endtroducing” on my iPod, and I listened to it that night as I was lying in bed going to sleep.

Let me tell you, it was very surprising but calming at the same time. I don’t think I have ever had a listening experience quite the same as this one. The album painted a picture of a futuristic industrialized cityscape in some songs for example “Organ Donor”, and of a naturally exotic utopia in others “Midnight in a Perfect World”. I found this combination to be quite the interesting one. In order to legitimately be attempting to fall asleep, I obviously had my eyes closed during the listening. This was the catalyst of the entire mental journey. I recommend listening to the album in bed.

The moment before falling asleep, that I am almost positive a large amount of people go through, in which we think over the present days, the yesterdays, and the tomorrows ties perfectly with DJ Shadow’s music. It is reflection, and during reflection visualizations occur. Visualization is valuable with the funky, and robotic, and serene aspects of DJ Shadow. DJ Shadow’s use of samples brings a great texture to his work.

The various voices and noise he incorporates act just like the instrumentals in the way I was describing above. Even though they are expressed specifically, they are up for open interpretation. Samples, no matter what kind they may be, add a flavor to the music they reside in. Shadow takes full advantage of this property in “Endtroducing.” I found myself listening intently to various voice samples in songs like “Napalm Brain/Scatter Brain” and “Building Steam with a Grain of Salt,” and the segments really did contribute to the characters of the songs that, in turn, affected the storylines.

Along with a wide variety of sampling, Shadow includes numerous piano melodies. I look at piano as having a universal timbre. Piano just seems to fit well in so many genres of music, and the tracks on “Endtroducing” are not an exception. Shadow blends the instrument very well with his style. Combining the hardcore drumbeats, the most definitely interesting samples, the piano along with other instruments, I just enjoy the piano, and various effects, like reverb and panning, this music begins to sound, and shall I say look, like no other.By (Charlottesville, VA, USA).

Review is for a different.( 0)( 0)Barrier crossing Hip-Hop opusOne of the great things about this truly outstanding album is that hip-hop and non-hip-hop fans alike will enjoy it. I dont like hip-hop but this album just has something special about it. Nearly every song has a timelessness about it. Josh Daviss use of samples is just right and is never too pretentious. One of my particular favourite things about this album is the occasional use of piano. It sounds great and really adds something to the tracks its featured on.
